Kindergarten Enrollment 2026-2027
Dear Buckeye Families,
We wanted to share an important update regarding Kindergarten enrollment requirements in the state of Ohio, which will take effect at the beginning of the 2026-2027 school year.
What Changed in Ohio Law?
In December of 2025, House Bill 114 was signed into law, changing how Kindergarten eligibility is determined across Ohio. Under this new law, all public school districts must now follow a uniform age requirement for Kindergarten enrollment based on the first day of Kindergarten instruction.
What Does This Mean for Buckeye?
To be eligible for Kindergarten at Buckeye Local Schools for the 2026-2027 school year, a child must be five (5) years old on or before August 26, 2026. This requirement replaces Buckeye's previous August 1st cutoff date, which is no longer permitted under state law.
What Does This Mean for Families?
The previous August 1 eligibility date used by Buckeye is no longer in effect. Children who turn five between August 2nd and August 26th are now eligible to begin Kindergarten.
Children who turn six (6) on or before August 26, 2026, and who have not yet completed first grade, are required to be enrolled in school.
We are Here to Support You!
We recognize that this change may impact family planning in different ways. For some, this update may provide new opportunities; for others, it may raise questions about readiness and next steps. Please know that our Buckeye team is ready to support you.
Additional information regarding Kindergarten registration, screening opportunities and readiness supports will be shared in the coming months.
In the meantime, if you have any questions or would like to discuss your child's situation, please contact our Buckeye Elementary Office or Central Registration. We are happy to help.
Sincerely,
Mrs. Sarah E Rivera
